About Lowell, Massachusetts

Lowell was founded in the early nineteen century, specifically for manufacturing textiles. Lowell is 25 miles northwest of Boston along the rapids of the Merrimack River. Lowell was originally part of East Chelmsford, Massachusetts, a farming community. The newly founded mill town of Lowell was named after the visionary leader, Francis Cabot Lowell. As Lowell’s population increased, it acquired land from adjacent towns, and subsequently became a burgeoning urban city.

By the mid nineteenth century, Lowell became the largest industrial city in the United States, primarily from textile production. The city continued to thrive as a major industrial center throughout the nineteenth century. Lowell has since diversified its economy after the relocation of the textile industry (taken from Wikipedia).
