Littleton was first settled in 1686 by Anglo-European settlers and was officially incorporated by act of the Massachusetts General Court on November 2, 1714. It was originally part of the Puritan movement in the newly settled colonies, and subsequently became occupied by Congregationalists in latter years.
The town was the site of the Nashoba Plantation, being the sixth Praying Indian village, referring to the Native Americans who had became Christians. The plantation was situated on land between Lake Nagog and Fort Pond.
Nearby historical sites include the Brooks Estate, the Dillaway-Thomas House and the Elizabeth Boit House. Several parks nearby including Cochituate State Park, Franklin Park and Great Brook Farm State Park. Other interesting places include the Franklin Park Zoo, the Garden in the Woods, and the Tower Hill Botanical Garden.
